Do not Drive Close to the Edge of the Road
When you drive on a road, you should ensure that you are driving in the center of the lane and staying clear of the gutter. Most roads are slightly sloped to the edge of the road to allow for debris to drift to the edge of the road. If you drive too close to the side of the road you will run the risk of getting too close to possible debris and throwing it up into your vehicle. You should always ensure that you are driving away from the edge of the road so that you lower your risk of throwing debris up into your car.
Do not Tailgate
Whenever you tailgate cars, you run the risk of road debris being thrown up into your hood and windshield. You should make sure that you stay further away from the vehicles in front of you so that you do not get any rocks thrown up into your windshield. This is especially true with larger vehicles like an eighteen-wheeler. These larger vehicles will regularly throw rocks up into the air, meaning chipped windshields for those who dare to drive too close. If you do receive a rock chip in your windshield, you should take it into the body shop to be repaired. While rock chips may seem insignificant, they can quickly grow into large problems for your vehicle. They may begin as small chips, but with time the chips can easily grow and leave cracks across your windshield. In addition to windshield damage, these chips can create glares in your vision as the sun hits them.
Avoid Large Objects in the Road
If you see a large box or object sitting in the road, you should do your best to avoid hitting it. These objects can do a great deal of damage to your vehicle and leave it in the body shop for weeks. These objects can easily cause exterior body damage and engine damage depending on the object. What may look like an empty box sitting in the road can easily be a heavy package full of metal objects. If you have advance warning on the object, you should change lanes and slow down, and if you do not you should do your best to edge out of the way of the object. You should never swerve off the road to avoid an object, as this will leave you in a bad position. You should always try your hardest to avoid objects sitting in the road to avoid needing to take your vehicle into the body shop for extensive repairs.
Drive Slower
If you are consistently driving too fast, you will not have enough time to react to road debris. Road debris is already hard to avoid in some cases, so adding speed into the scenario can spell disaster for your vehicle. You should try your hardest to slow down and drive at or below the speed limit to avoid risking damage to your car. Hitting road debris at high speeds will do more damage to your car and leave your car in the auto body shop for weeks. Slow down while you are driving and avoid road debris. Even the smallest road debris will do extensive body damage to your vehicle when hit at high speeds, so watch your speed as you drive.
Summary
Make sure that you are always aware of your surroundings. Take time to analyze the road in front of you and watch for any possible road debris in your way. You should do your best to avoid any debris in the road, to save your car from extensive damage. Never speed, and you will have your best odds at keeping your car out of the body shop.
