Measure Each Piece
Before you go into the auto body shop to buy your new windshield wipers, you should take time to measure both blades on your windshield so that you know exactly which blades to buy. In many cases your blades will be different lengths, meaning that you will need to know both measurements to make sure that you get the right blades. You can easily take a ruler or tape measure out to your car to measure both blades before heading into the body shop.
Remove the Old Blades
You should be able to easily pull the blades up off your windshield, allowing you to unhook the old blades from the holder. You can pull the blade up slightly and then maneuver the blade off the holder after. While you pull the blade off you should ensure that the blade is kept away from the windshield. To protect your windshield from possible damage you should place one hand below the wiper and a towel on your windshield for cushioning. The last thing you want to do is to end up needing a windshield replacement because of your windshield wipers.
Replace the Blades
After you have removed the blades from the holders, you should begin the process of replacing the old blades. You should take the new blades and put them on the holders. To do this you can gently pull in the center of the blade and then hook the blade on the correct holder. During this process you need to keep track of each blade so that you do not put the wrong blade on a holder. If your blades are different sizes, you need to make sure that you do not mix the blades up during the replacement process. After you have replaced both blades, you can simply lay the holders back down on your windshield, and you will be good to go for your next rainy day.
How to Know When to Change Them
If you are not sure how often you need to change the wiper blades, there are easy things to look for. To start, most wiper blades need to be replaced every six to twelve months to ensure that they work properly. In addition to this, there are some simple warning signs that will begin to appear as your wiper blades become worn down. When you are driving and attempting to use your wiper blades, there should not be any streaks left across your windshield. If the wiper blades leave streaks on large wet spots on your windshield, then there is a good chance that it is time to change them out. If you notice streaks being left across your windshield, you should head up to your local auto body shop to purchase replacement blades soon.
Additional Warning Signs
If you are not sure how long it has been since your wipers have been changed, you can inspect them manually to check their quality. You can simply pinch the blade and slightly pull on it, allowing you to check for any rips or cracks in your blades. If you notice any abnormalities, then it is probably time to change your wiper blades. Any cracks in your blades indicate that they are becoming worn out and need a change. By occasionally taking time to check your wiper blades for this type of damage, you can identify problems with your windshield wipers and get them changed as soon as you need to. You should go into your local auto body shop and begin the replacement process as soon as you notice your wipers are faulty, as to protect your vision on the road.
